This Covid-era mid century new build borrows from its lakefront landscape and evokes a classic MCM vibe with contemporary touches.
When homeowners Andrea and Mark Brimmer decided they wanted to raise their family in a Mid Century Modern home, they knew that they would have to build it themselves. “We have both always loved mid-century design,” Andrea says. “For us, it brings back the joy and happiness of our childhood.” They purchased a two-acre lot surrounded by woods next to Lake Ponemah in Fenton, Michigan, to make their Michigan new build mid century dream a reality.
They sent an email to architect Karl Jasinski—a fellow enthusiast of MCM architecture and design—in the hopes that he would respond. “Literally one hour later, he replied to our email and attached sketches of both the exterior and interior of the home,” Andrea says. “He was clearly as excited as we were!”
Andrea and Mark hired Elin Walters of Exactly Designs to work on the design of the Michigan new build home and ensure their aesthetic goals were met. The build started right before Covid hit, which caused the entire project to take roughly 22 months to complete with some challenges due to material shortages and shut downs.
Inspired by Donald Wexler, William Krisel and Alexander Homes, Andrea and Mark wanted to bring in a desert-modernism look combined with a midwestern, Frank Lloyd Wright feel replete with lots of wood, earth tones and Roman brick. The abundance of windows create an indoor/outdoor connection with views of the lake and allow in natural light, while the butterfly roof lines and V-shaped porch support create a visually stunning curbside view.
“We wanted something that would stay in our family forever: timeless, significant and a ‘livable’ home where we could create memories and joy,” Andrea says.
